Schenectady – Alfred W. Canova, 96, formerly of Niskayuna, passed away peacefully on March 28 surrounded by his family.
Alfred is survived by his wife of 73 years, Carolyn, his children James Canova (Debra), Cynthia Michelin, William Canova (Amy), grandchildren Michael, Lauren, Steven, his brother Ronald Canova. Alfred was predeceased by his brother Lester, his sister Evelyn, and his grandson, Brandon.
Al was born in Holyoke, MA, graduating from Holyoke High School in 1946 with letters for baseball, football and ice hockey. He graduated from Lowell Textile Institute, now University of Massachusetts Lowell, with letters for football and baseball, and was voted as athlete of the year.
Al earned the rank of Army 2nd Lieutenant Infantry serving at Camp Kilmer, Ft. Benning and Ft. Lee.
Al worked for many years as a resident Fire Protection Engineer for Factory Mutual Insurance Company traveling to Argentina, Chile, England, Belgium and Germany. He enjoyed golf and the New York Yankees, but most of all spending time with his family.
Al was an active Scottish Rite Mason, Shriner and active in Eastern Star and enjoyed volunteering at the Food Pantry. He and Carolyn were active members of Eastern Parkway United Methodist Church since 1960 and enjoyed being youth group counselors for many years. Al especially enjoyed singing in the choir.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Eastern Parkway United Methodist Church, 943 Palmer Ave., Schenectady, NY. The Order of Eastern Star then the Masonic Service will commence at 11:00 am followed by the Church Funeral Service at 11:30 am. Burial will be held at 1:30 PM on Thursday, April 3, 2025, at the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville, NY.
