Edwin F. Gillette, 99, died peacefully March 4, 2016 at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, New York, with his loved ones at his side.
Born and raised in Branford, Connecticut, Edwin graduated from Hamilton College and received a PhD in Mathematics from Syracuse University. For 45 years he was a college professor, and was on the faculties of Middlebury College, Williams College, Syracuse University, and Union College. He was a Full Professor of Mathematics at Union College for 27 years, and spent time directing the summer In-service Institute for high school teachers; a program of Union College and the National Science Foundation.
Edwin enjoyed his family, playing golf and tennis, and was happily married to Barbara Kitson Gillette, who died in 2011. She was a pianist, organist, and teacher who he met at Middlebury College, and was his constant companion and loving wife of 69 years. They were long standing members of Saint George's Episcopal Church in Schenectady.
Edwin is survived by his two sons, and their wives; Stephen and Helga Gillette of Simi Valley, California and Michael and Ann Gillette of Tenafly, New Jersey. He also leaves four grandchildren; Lani Veler of Coppell, Texas, Christopher Gillette of Orange Beach, Alabama, Caitlin Gillette of Brooklyn, New York, and Lance Gillette of Brooklyn New York, and eleven great grandchildren.
A memorial service will take place at Jones Funeral Home, 1503 Union Street, (at McClellan St.), in Schenectady at 1:00 pm Saturday March 12, 2016. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend.
