Scotia- Franklyn C. Hayford MD 84, died peacefully at home, Ocotber 31, 2009, after a brief illness.
Franklyn was born in Saco, ME to Charles A. Hayford and Alice (Freeman) Hayford on May 17, 1925. He grew up in Saco and graduated from Thornton Academy. He served in the US Navy for 3+ years, following this. Then, he attended and graduated from U of Maine, followed by graduation from the Tufts Univ. School of Medicine. He did his internship and residency in Medicine and Pulmonary Disease at Albany Medical Center. He started his practice at Glenridge Hospital and was the Supervisory Staff Physician. He was serving as the Medical Director, when the hospital was closed. During this time, he also maintained a private practice (until 1990) in Scotia and Schenectady in Internal Medicine, with a specialty in pulmonary disease.
Franklyn served on many boards; he was a member and past President of the Schenectady County Medical Society; member of the former Community Welfare Council; a Medical Director of the Visiting Nurses Ass'c.; member of the Trudeau Society; and was one of the founders of MVP. He served there as the Medical Director of the MVMA (Mohawk Valley Medical Associates) until his retirement in Feb. 1998. He was an attending physician at the former St. Clare's and Ballston Spa Hospitals and also Ellis Hospital. He was a Director of the Schenectady Auto Club (AAA). He was a long time member of the Scotia United Methodist Church of Scotia, where is also served on many committees.
Franklyn was honored by the former St.Clare's Hospital in 1996 in the second round of Spirit of Healing Awards.
Franklyn was a member since 1969 of the Mohawk Club and served as the Treasurer and was a Trustee. His marriage and reception to Trudi was held there on Jan. 16, 2000. He was also a former member of the Ballston Spa Country Club.
He was pre-deceased by his first wife of 44 years, Phyllis J. Peterson of Portsmouth, NH. He was also pre-deceased by his younger brother, David F.Hayford of Enfield, CT.
He is survived by his beloved wife Gertrude (Trudi) Kasper Girvin Hayford of Scotia, daughter, Challiss H. (Carmen, Sr.) Maio of Galway, step-daughter, Gail Girvin of Scotia, sister-in-law, Elizabeth Hayford of Enfield, CT and her three children (David, Debra, & George and their families). He has two, step-grandsons; Dean Maio of NC and Carmen Maio, Jr. of CA.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral service on Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at 11 AM at the Jones Funeral Home with Rev. Dana Carroll officiating. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4 PM to 7 PM at the Jones Funeral Home, 1503 Union St.,(at McClellan St.), for those who wish to call. Burial will be in West Galway Cemetery.
