Fred W. Staub

April 5, 1928 — March 15, 2018

Fred W. Staub, n Wolfgang Fritz, April 5, 1928 March 15, 2018, lived a life worthy of memoir and thankfully wrote it. More than my Share tells the unlikely story of escape from Nazi Germany, unexpected welcome as refugee in England, watching ships in his convoy across the Atlantic under attack, then returning to Germany for US military intelligence at the end of World War II. He used the GI Bill to earn two degrees in mechanical engineering from RPI.
Fortune smiled on him again with a rewarding career, spanning over 45 years at GE, producing dozens of published works, numerous patents, and culminating with ASME, Coolidge and Clare Hall Cambridge University fellowships and ASMEs Melville Medal. Luck was still with him at age 65 when he narrowly survived a cardiac arrest thanks to quick thinking by his GE colleagues and EMTs.
By far his greatest fortune was 52 years of marriage to his soul mate and fellow adventurer, Mareline. He is survived by her, the indomitable spirit of his first child, Jana, his daughter Pam, son Phillip, their partners and six grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers those wishing to recognize his life are invited to donate to Doctors Without Borders, ACLU or refugee support. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no formal service.
