Janet Butte Christman, 83, died suddenly on Friday, October 7, 2016.
Janet was born on April 12, 1933 in Steubenville, OH, the daughter of the late Mildred and John Butte.
She was a retired pathologist who obtained her undergraduate degree at Muskingum University in New Concord, OH, her medical degree at Case Western Reserve University and completed her residency at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, Copperstown, NY. Janet worked at Saratoga Hospital, St. Clare's Hospital, St. Peter's Hospital, Lab Corp and finally Bellevue Women's Hospital. She was a member of the American Medical Association, the Medical Society of Schenectady County, American Board of Pathology and several other Medical Associations.
Janet and her family were members of Calvary United Methodist Church, Esperance Sloansville United Methodist Church and currently Eastern Parkway United Methodist Church.
She enjoyed Operas and traveled to the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City with family and friends. She also enjoyed stock car racing especially when her son was on the race track. She was a season ticket holder at Albany-Saratoga Speedway and Lebanon Valley Speedway for years. She read hundreds of mysteries and accumulated a large collection. She also had a green thumb and had beautiful and some rare plants. An animal lover, she rescued many cats and dogs over the years.
Janet was predeceased by her husband, John W. Christman, her son, John W. Christman, Jr., her parents, her brother John C. Butte, Jr. and her step daughter Tina Graham.
She is survived by her sister, Helen (Dick) Salisbury of Parma Heights, OH., her daughter Cindy (Kevin) Christman Priest of Niskayuna, her grandchildren Allison Christman, William Priest and Alexandra Priest, 3 step children Helen Warner, John (Leslie) Christman and Debbie (Mike) Porter and their children John Warner, Jr, George Warner, Michael Porter, Jr. Shaun Porter, Danyail Porter, Bettina Fonda and Corey Graham. Her sister-in-Law Elizabeth Christman Morris, 2 Nieces Karen Butte, Michelle Butte and nephew Rick Salisbury. Her cousin Lois Ann (Dom) Perry of Cicero, NY. There are also many, nieces, nephews and close friends.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at the Jones Funeral Home 1503 Union St., (at McClellan St.), Schenectady, NY from 4 PM to 7 PM. Funeral service will be Wednesday at 11 AM at Eastern Parkway United Methodist Church at 943 Palmer Ave Schenectady, NY followed by interment at the Park View Cemetery 40 Fehr Ave Schenectady, NY.
Directly following, a luncheon will be held at the church.
Contributions in her name can be made to Eastern Parkway United Methodist Church, Esperance Sloansville United Methodist Church or the Animal Protective Foundation.
