Mary W. Hannahs

Niskayuna - Mary W. Hannahs, 93, formerly of Niskayuna, passed away peacefully on December 20 surrounded by her family. The wife of the late Walter G. Hannahs, she was born in Johnstown, NY in 1931 to the late Harry and Julia (Krikelas) Wilson.

After graduating from Johnstown High School and Burdett College (Boston), she began her career at the New Haven Railroad in Boston and subsequently General Electric Company in Schenectady. After marrying Walter in 1956, she moved to Rochester, where she worked at the University of Rochester until beginning her family. Mary moved to Niskayuna in 1966, where she resided until 2022. When her children were older she continued her career at the Legislative Index Company, Union College and Alternative Care.

Mary donated her time and talent to many organizations throughout her lifetime. She was an active volunteer in organizations including Hospice of Schenectady, SERV International and the Schenectady Home Furnishings Program. Her religious faith sustained her throughout her life. She volunteered in many capacities at her parish, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, where she was a member of Daughters of the King. Earlier in her life, she was an active volunteer for Church Women United and the Albany Episcopal Diocese.

Mary was a loving spouse, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend who had a beautiful and long life and will be very missed. She was very active in the lives of her children as they were growing up and involved in the lives of her grandchildren, never missing concerts or games. In addition to her husband Walter and son Andrew Hannahs, she was predeceased by siblings Katherine, George, James, Russell and Peter Wilson of Johnstown. She is survived by children James N. and Diane J. Hannahs of Schenectady and Carol Byrne (Michael) of North Kingstown, RI. She was the grandmother of LB Hannahs (Dr. Adriana Wilson, MD) of Schenectady, Alaina Kim (Dr. Richard Kim, MD) of Gansevoort, Scott Hannahs of Johnstown, James Hannahs of Athens and Michael and Katherine Byrne of North Kingstown, RI. She was the great grandmother of Elliot and Theo Malivuk-Hannahs, Jack and Skylar Hannahs, Hazel and Isla Kim, and is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Services will include a wake at the Jones Funeral Home, 2020 Central Ave., Albany NY 12205 on Saturday, January 4 from 10-12 PM and a funeral to follow at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 10 N. Main Ave., Albany, NY 12203 at 1 PM.
