Robert E. Elwell of Sacandaga Rd, died on November 28th, 2012 while he was being cared for at the Daughters of Sarah Nursing home. Mr. Elwell was 97 years young and was a source of great joy for all who knew him. He was a talented musician who played almost any instrument you could name. And, he kept a piano always close to him so he could play at any time.If there was a stray animal around he took it in. There were no boundaries to his kindess and good will. If you needed him he was there. He also served in the army and worked at the GE in Schenectady.
Mr. Elwell was the son of Emerson D. Elwell and Margaret Belise Elwell. Mr. Elwell married Elizabeth Williams who predeceased him on 02/26/95. His grandson Robert C. Elwell also predeceased him on January 30, 2002.
Mr. Elwell is survived by two sons, Robert D. Elwell(Maria) and Mark R. Elwell. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren-Robin Elwell, Rowland Elwell, Jason Elwell,and Laurie Elwell, as well as well as several great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren.
Mr. Elwell ran his own business after his marriage and his return to this area. All the while, he kept on learning and taking on new ventures. Locally he belonged to
Musician's local #85. He was also a member of St. George's Masonic Lodge as well as a member of the Shriner's Cyress band.He also played in many other bands and played music every year that he could at the Altamont Fair.
Bob was a man who was constantly learning. When he wanted to know about blacksmithing he sent to England for books on the subject and then built himself a smithy where he put his knowledge into practice. He also loved his animals and his zest for life was shown in his different passions. His intelligence was without exception and his heart took everyone into consideration. He was a modern day Renaissance Man and he will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Bob was a member of the Scotia Baptist Church and held his religion close. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He will be laid to rest next to his wife in Tribes Hill Cemetery.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 3, 2012 at 11 AM at the Jones Funeral Home, 1503 Union St., (at McClellan St.), Schenectady. A calling hour will be held from 10 AM prior to the service on Monday.
