Halfmoon - Stephen M. Van Der Volgen Sr. went to his eternal rest on Sunday May 3, 2009 after a brief, but courageous, battle with cancer.
He is survived by his loving wife Carolyn (Klinger), children Denise Ayotte (Allen) and Stephen Van Der Volgen Jr., and by his three granddaughters, Stephanie Ayotte, Christina Ayotte, and Jenna Van Der Volgen, as well as many more family and friends.
Stephen was proud of his service to his country and community. He was part of the Navy Reserves, Sea Bees Reserves, and the Army Reserves. Stephen was the past commander of the Sea Bee Veterans of America Island X10. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 1450 in Halfmoon, the Fraternal Order of the Eagles AERIE 2586 in Saratoga Springs, and the Halfmoon Senior Center. As a volunteer firefighter, Stephen was a life member of the West Albany Fire Company Number 2 where he was once president, and later he was part of the WK Mansfield Hose Company where he served as an assistant chief.
He was retired from the New York State Thruway Authority where he had worked for over 30 years. Stephen will be remembered for his love of the outdoors and generous spirit by all who knew him.
Family and friends may call Wednesday, May 6th from 4pm to 8pm at the Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home, 1550 Route 9, Clifton Park, NY.
Funeral procession will meet Thursday morning at 11AM at the Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home and proceed to the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Rd, Schuylerville, NY. Funeral prayers will be at 12:30 with full Military Honors.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Stephen's honor to the Ordway Research Institute, Inc. 150 New Scotland Ave., Albany, NY 12208.
