LAWRENCEVILLE, GA. Walter C. Huening, Jr., 86, long-time resident of the Schenectady, NY, recently relocated to Lawrenceville, passed away Saturday, August 29, 2009.
Walter was born February 10, 1923 in Boston, MA to Walter and Gladys Whittemore Huening, and grew up in Needham, MA.
He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BSEE degree from Tufts University in 1944 and taught there as an electrical engineering instructor from 1946 to 1948.
Walter was employed by General Electric as an engineer in various locations for 41 years, retiring in 1989.
He was a Registered Professional Engineer in New York and Ohio; contributed to many technical papers, journals, and books; and was a technical advisor to the International Electrotechnical Committee from 1972 to 1989. He was the recipient of GE Power Systems Sector Engineering Awards in 1983, the IEEE Richard Harold Kaufman Award in 1988, and an IEEE Industrial and Commercial Power Systems Achievement Award in 1989.
Walter also served in the US Navy Reserve, with two tours of active duty, retiring as a Lt. Commander.
Walter was a devotee and collector of traditional jazz music and an avid photographer. Combining the two, he received photography credit on a number of independent label jazz CD inserts.
On August 5, 1944 he married Margaret McGeary who passed on in 1986. For many years he and Margaret owned and operated Marwal Kennel breeding and raising Shetland Sheepdogs.
On April 9, 1988, he married Elizabeth Young Wright, who survives. He and Betsy enjoyed retirement together, relaxing at home in Niskayuna, NY, wintering in Florida, and attending jazz festivals.
Walter is also survived by a sister, Nance Elfenbein of Bellport, NY; children Susan (Brian) Locke of Portland, ME and Peter (Sandra) Huening of Scotia, NY; step-children Pam (Bill) Buckley of Buford, GA and Steve (Tammy) Wright of Sugar Hill, GA; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service Celebrating the Life of Mr. Huening will be held on Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at 11 AM at the Jones Funeral Home, 1503 Union St., ( at McClellan St.), Schenectady. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice in Memory of Walter C. Huening, Jr.
